I am writing this from our hostel in Vienna. We arrived after a 7 and half hour flight from Montreal. We also gained 4 and half hours while we were flying so we left Montreal at 9:30pm and arrived around noon. After a long wait to clear customs we took the fast CAT train to the middle of the city taking only 16 mins. We then took the subway and with no trouble made our way to our accommodation.
We are staying in an apartment building in a local neighbourhood. There are six bedrooms and a common living area. The other rooms are occupied by a group of women who come in late and leave early so we haven't met them yet . It is well located, clean and affordable so it fits the bill for us.
We caught up on our missed sleep and then went to explore the neighbourhood. The city seems clean and in this area safe as we were walking at night. We were fortunate to stumble across a local restaurant ( Haas Biesel ) which was filled with patrons so that we had to share our table with two guys from Germany.
The menu was all in German so the owner who spoke perfect English brought us a typical Austrian meal…to start a creamy potato soup with wonderful mushrooms followed by tafelspitz which is boiled beef fillet served with Apfelkren (apple horseradish), mayo with herbs, bits of carrot and turnip and roasted potatoes. This ended with two great desserts, warm plum dumplings and seasonal fruit and ice cream. Even Don could not resist dessert which is rare for him. Oh yes we also had great local Austrian wine. It was one of the best meals we have had in a restaurant in a long time. It was also a great introduction to Vienna! Oh yes, I think this may blog may also become a food and drink blog as well...
We are off to explore the historic city centre in the morning after we visit the Naschmarkt for breakfast.
An Austrian ale and a popular drink here which is light beer mixed with lemonade. |
The streets are wide and the buildings beautiful. |
The meal I mentioned which tasted even better than it looked.. |
Looks like you're off to a great start!
