Bratislava Slovakia

Day 5 Bratislava

Today we took the train to Bratislava which is the capital city of Slovakia. It is located about an hour from Vienna; they are the two closest capital cities in Europe. The train ride was quite comfortable and went through a lot of small towns and farmland. Once there we took the tram into the centre of the city.

Our group getting the train to Bratislava

Bratislava is located on the Danube River and has a population of around 440,000.It has a small historical city center and the city has grown around it. The city has a lot of street art as well as being a city of fountains.

The town square

We took a small train tour around the city and then spent the day exploring it ourselves. We left the group and did not see any of them after that. The city is quite nice with large and small squares and what seemed to us a lot of young people. Oh yes, we also remembered that it is the home town of Halak, the hot Montreal Canadian’s goalie during the playoffs.

We went to a Slovak pub and enjoyed a meal of cheese filled dumplings served with sour cream and smoked bacon. The cheese was sheep cheese. I also had a white Slovak wine from the region and again it was good. They know how to make white wine here as well as serve it at the proper temperature.

Slovak Dumplings

Instead of taking the train back we took the boat up the river to Vienna. The ride was 90 mins and it took us right into the city center next to the metro line. On the boat we met a young Austrian couple, Matthew and Antonia, who were quite friendly and invited us out for a drink when we got back to the city. We took them up on the offer and had a pleasant time with them.

On the Danube leaving Bratislava

We then made our way back on the Metro and can say we had quite a wonderful day.

  2. Those Slovak dumplings look very much like Polish dumplings! How did the sheep's cheese taste in them? Was it smooth or sharp tasting?

  3. Margaret, the sheep cheese was salty tasting but smooth more than sharp. We are now in Poland and the dumplings taste very similar.
