Prague, Day 1
Arrived in Prague after a 4 hour bus ride from Cesky Krumlov ;quite a fancy bus with an attendant serving hot chocolate and cappuccino with The Dukes of Hazzard playing on the movie screen in English. We then took the subway into the centre of the city and our accommodations for the next three nights. Our first impression was that the subway was not as clean as Vienna and neither was the city.
On the move again |
We have some unique accommodations here as we are staying in private apartments, some of us are sharing but Don and I got a small studio with just ourselves. We are sharing a porch with a local Czech family. The apartment is well located not far too walk to all the attractions.
We settled in, went to lunch with the group and then did a short walking tour with our guide, Kris. His role is to get us to place to place, give us a basic orientation and then we are on our own if we choose. Sometimes we eat with the others or sightsee with them and other times we go on our own as we did today. We didn’t walk much as we are waiting for tomorrow so we sat around, had a drink and checked our internet. As before it is very difficult to get a good connection anywhere but I did manage to get a post on the blog as well as check our email. Still no internet in our apartment.
Our studio apartment |
The street where our apt is located, typical neighbourhood |
On our walk around Kris pointed out a lot of the major sights and gave us some directions for the next few days. As we went around it seemed to us that the city was very busy, there were literally thousands of people in the street, so much that at places it was difficult to walk. This must be a popular tourist destination as they were everywhere. Kris said that in the summer it is much worst.
Our group in the Old Town square |
One of the churches in the main square |
The city is very compact around a number of squares. It is known as the City of a Hundred Spires which was very evident as we were admiring the buildings. The city is located on both sides of the Vlavta River which was the same one we rafted on yesterday. There are a number of bridges but the most famous is the Charles Bridge. Over this bridge is the way to Prague Castle.
Don on the Charles Bridge, thinking where the ?? am I? |
We headed out for supper on our own to a neighbourhood Czech restaurant which was packed with beer drinking, smoking people. One of the things we have noticed since we began our trip is that in bars and restaurants the most people we see are men, in small or large groups. We are wondering where the women are.
We again had a meat and potatoes meal with Don having beef with bread and potato dumplings and I with chicken and mashed potatoes. These were delicious as they were seasoned with caraway seeds something I would never think to put in mashed potatoes.
This is a plate full as usual, my pants are already getting tight!! |
We ended the night with drinks with our new Aussie and Kiwi friends.
Dukes of Hazzard! LOL! No wonder Europeans think we're all idiots.
