Leaving on a Jet Plane

Left Edmonton yesterday morning headed for Cancun on the first leg of our journey to Progreso. The West Jet flight left on time and was full of smiling faces, a lot of families on board heading down for New Years.

We arrived in Cancun on time, made our way to Hostal Queztal and took a breath. The owner, Monica, remembered us and we were greeted with a hug. She has expanded the place since we last stayed there so we had a king size private room with a nice patio and a garden view. As usual we enjoyed our stay there as we always meet such interesting travellers. Last night as we all had supper together I counted over 50 people staying there. I think we outaged (?) most of them by 30 years! But we got great travel tips!

As soon as we got off the bus from the airport and started walking we were quickly reminded of the sights, sounds and smells of Mexico. The air was warm and humid, everyone was out enjoying the night and the restaurants were setting up for the evening.

There are piƱatas everywhere

Street stalls are busy with many customers.

The streets are full of buses and policia.

We took the bus to Merida today, cost us around 30 dollars for two for the four hour bus ride on a very nice bus. Made our way to Hotel Marionetas which is a few streets from the center of the city. The hotel where we usually stay was booked so this was one of the few I could find with a vacancy, however it is quite nice.
Beautiful courtyard and small pool.

The breakfast area...Mexico has the best courtyards!

We went out in search of something to eat but since it is New Years Eve a lot of restaurants were set up for private parties. So we enjoyed our walk and eventually found a place that serves my favourtite Yucatan food...cochinita pibil with warm tortillas.

The streets of Merida were full of tourists and locals enjoying the warm evening. We were looking for New Years celebrations but were told that here in the Yucatan it is a family affair with families gathering at home for special meals, fireworks and in Merida for the New Year most families create an effigy of an old man stuffed with firecrackers symbolizing the old year. At exactly midnight they put ablaze the effigy of the old man in the middle of the streets which is very symbolic of burning the old year. As the effigy is being burnt to ashes there are thunderous sounds of the firecrackers from the entire neighborhood filling the air. As I write this the firecrackers are starting around me.

There were lots of light displays around town.

( apologize for the quality of some of these night pics, I was walking and taking pics at the same time. I just love pics that capture the lives of ordinary people )

Finally a toast of tequila and Feliz Ano!

Tomorrow we will take the bus to Progreso to check into our rental for the next couple of months. Looking forward to getting to a place that we can unpack and put our heads down for a longer time. I was counting today that we have slept in seven different beds since we left home on Nov 13 so it is time to settle for awhile.

Christmas in the Rockies

We also spent a few days in Jasper, a small town in the Canadian Rockies. We rented a car and drove approximately 350 kms southwest to reach Jasper.

Jasper surrounded by the Rockies

Driving into Jasper

Looks cold doesn't it?

We stayed at the Jasper Inn and suites where we had a small one bedroom with a lovely wood burning fireplace.

Dawn and Matt went skiing while we walked and explored the town and some of the trails. We had the company of Rory as we were also dog sitting for one day. As you can see by the pictures she is a one eyed Husky who lost her left eye to a porcupine quill this fall. She is a lovely dog who doesn't demand too much and is great company.

The area was decorated for the season...

We went for a drink at Jasper Park Lodge, one of the fanciest hotels in the area...

Saw some of the local wildlife...

It was a nice side trip from the city. When we got back to Edmonton the weather had changed for the better with only -1.

We have enjoyed our time here with Matt,Dawn and Rory and hope we can visit again before they leave.

Winter in the cold, white North

This Christmas finds us visiting with Dawn, Matt and Rory in Edmonton, Alberta. We have been here since Dec 16th and will be leaving again on Dec 30th for our place in the sun.
Dawn lives in a nice condo loft near Oliver Square so we could walk most everywhere as well as take the bus. Edmonton is a very cold city and most days it has been - 20 therefore our walks have been a lot shorter than usual. The other day we took the bus to Costco with our backpacks and laughed as we gingerly picked our way over the icy sidewalks. Who walks to Costco anyway?
The other thing we noticed about Edmonton is the deplorable state of the streets and sidewalks. It seems that the city does very little snow clearing and as we stand by the crosswalks to try and get across the street without falling it seems all the vehicles just slide right through. Homeowners and landlords are responsible for keeping the sidewalks clear and most of them ignore this responsibility so again it seems when we walk we are constantly worrying about falling. This is not a place I would like to live in the winter. Never been here in the summer so can't comment.

We have walked to some of the nearby streets including parts of Jasper Ave which has a lot of galleries and 124th street which is a nice street with small shops and restaurants.

Though the city does have nice areas such as the historic district of Old Strathacona. We took the bus and walked there one day and enjoyed the stroll. It was our anniversary as well so we had Vietnamese pho for our special lunch. It is one of our favourite meals so definitely a treat!

Christmas dinner was also a treat. Matt cooked Bison Wellington as one of the courses and it was really good. The bison was a mild tasting, lean meat. Their American neighbours, James and Sarah and their dog, Lampard joined us for dinner so there was a fine crew!
