Settling in...

December 9, 2010

Well we have been here a liitle over a week and are starting to settle in. We have our meter back from the electric company without much hassle and we have bought a Mexican clothes line. We have a washer and dryer but with the great weather we thought the clothes would be great outside so we trotted off to the mercardo and spotted this one. No need for clothes pins as the line opens up and grabs the clothes!! They also dry within minutes!!

Wash day in Progreso!

The pool guy, Ariel and his son were by to clean out the pool and we got a chance to swim after. The pool is a far size and very private in the back of the house. By the time the sun is up in the midday sky the water is warm and quite refreshing. This is one of the pluses of this house for sure.

I can take a lot of this!!

Me too!!

We also have a cleaning lady,Maria, who comes on Tuesday with her daughter Fatima. They don't speak any English but we manage to communicate and they do a great job, inside and out. With all the garbage collected and taken away by Ariel the property was sparkling!

Now garbage is something I never get used to so I am out with my rubber gloves on picking up the garbage outside the house. Since the house is on the beach road and there is no municipal garbage collection people often use this area to dump their garbage and with the winds off the water it keeps blowing across to this place. As we have travelled to different countries it always amazes me how so many places have not fiqured out what they are doing to the environment.Such a beautiful beach only to be covered in litter.

My bit for the environment

We are also getting around to get some supplies for us and the house so we hitched a ride into Merida to go to Costco and then Home Depot, both filled with gringos and well dressed Mexicans. Costco looks very much like ours at home except the snack bar is outside and you get to eat your hotdog under the sun umbrella. Prices were expensive for Mexico, the best price was 13.00 CAD for a 24 case of Corona.

We also stopped at the bike shop and got our Christmas presents, a bike each. Not too fancy though mine is pink. We took them out for a ride today and know we will be able to explore the place a bit better and go a little farther afield with them. And as a bonus we will get a little exercise on the side.

Should I get this one?

Today was cheap beer day at Barlouvento so we went to sit outside and have a chat with a group of Canadians some who have moved here, others who have been coming here for many years and another couple who came for 2 months and this year are back for 5. They seem to be a tight group and look out for each other. We were getting all the scoop on where to eat, Happy Hours and good places for breakfast.
We exchanged emails and will hopefully stay in touch as it is comforting to know others who can speak your language and will be there to help if needed.

A very juicy watermelon...
