Backwaters of Kerala, India...Part 1

The highlight of our stop here was the time spent exploring the Kerala backwaters which are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km of waterways, and sometimes compared to the American Bayou. They are one of the main attractions in Kerala and a tour through them is not to be missed.

One of the many bridges you need to cross as you travel around the area...

We joined a day tour which consisted of people from France, Germany, England and India, boarding the boat...

The waters are very still and as our boat moved across the water there was complete quiet as we started to take in the beauty of the place...

I had a front row seat....

Our boat man hard at work, he used a large stick to push the boat through the water...

We met many other boats all without motors which kept the stillness on the water...

The scenery was amazing, it was so green everywhere even with the shadows in the waters...

Many people live in the backwaters with lots of their houses only accessed by boat...

This man was having his morning wash...

We left the larger lake as our boatman steered us into a smaller channel...

Don as well as lots of others were relaxing...

As we went further in it was difficult to tell the water from the trees, the landscape looked like abstract paintings!

Reflection of bird in the water...we saw lots of different birds but I wasn’t quite quick enough to get many pictures but here is the Kingfisher...

A heron...

Lots of people fishing on the banks...

Some more scenery...

TO be continued in next post...
