Udiapur, “ the Venice of India “ Part 1

After a great stay in Pushkar we started on the road to Udiapur which is 5 hours south by road...

As always we enjoy the sights we see along the way...

This area has lots of reservoirs to collect water during the rainy season

Love this older lady’s style..

Many of the highways we travel on are toll roads so they are in great condition with lots of traffic, though we don’t think there are many rules about the loads they carry...

We passed through a lot of small market towns, always so colourful...

This picture shows a woman at her well...

Udiapur is also called the White City because of the production of marble in this area. As we got closer to the city we saw miles and miles of marble for sale, much of it exported as well as granite from this area...

Our accommodation in Udiapur is another lovely homestay hosted by Hari and her husband Pari. She only has one room to rent but she also runs a cooking school while her husband gives palm readings.
Their house is located in a busy neighbourhood surrounded by wedding gardens so they are always passing by her balcony.

The groom arrives on a horse accompanied by his family and friends...

The truck in front plays very loud music so you can hear them coming from a long way...

The followers dance and sing to the music...

Another day we saw a funeral procession, noisy but not so much as the wedding...

The cart holds the remains of the deceased person, and again it is in a procession...

The women were carrying pots with what looked like grasses in them.

Wherever we looked in this city there was some type of parade, procession or celebration...

Udiapur is a city of lakes so there are lots of bridges to cross as we walked...

Water reflections...

Sunset on the water...

One night we went out to eat at a restaurant that overlooked the water and as we ate fireworks lit up the sky...

The service at the restaurant was first class and the meal delicious...

They even provided after dinner organic cigars, and no I am not a smoker but did try them, very mild tasting...

I also got an opportunity to visit the market with Hari and Pari...the market was a large wholesale market situated quite far from their house, the variety was incredible including many vegetables and fruits I had never seen before. Here are some shots of us at the market...

Hari is a great cook and very particular about choosing her produce...

I am her helper...

As is her husband...

Some market scenes...

On the way out we stopped for sugar cane juice made by this vendor with quite a machine...

He takes the sugar cane and squeezes it through the machine, he then puts mint and limes in the middle of the cane and continues to squeeze until he extracts all of the juice...

It is then put through a sieve and served, it was very refreshing...

Udiapur also has lots of history which is the next post...
