The Golden Pass Railway...a day of varied landscapes.

We were up early this morning as we prepared for a long travel day. We were surprised when our host, Sabine, brought breakfast to our room. She was having friends in and shared with us as well. We really appreciated her kindness.

Sabine's delicious breakfast made fresh that morning.

We left Lausanne yesterday, took the train back to Montreux to catch the Golden Pass train to Murren. The Golden Pass is one of the most scenic rail routes in Switzerland and as a result they run special cars over this part of the railway. We were hoping to get a Panoramic car but the one we travelled on was the Classic. This train is reminiscent of old railway cars with wooden tables and old fashioned lamps that light up when we go through the many tunnels.

The Golden Pass train

Don still managed to find his beer when went through the tunnels!

Our last view of Lake Geneva...

As we travelled from Lausanne the scenery changed from a lakeside to more of a forested area...

Our neighbours across the aisle had a great view as well.

We then started to travel through many farms, this one was a gruyere cheese farm.

Even though the farms seemed endless they were always well mowed, not surprising I suppose as the Swiss like everything tidy!

We also passed a lot of small, rural towns, all of them with chalet style houses.

A lot of them with brightly coloured window boxes.it looks like the place that Heidi lived.

As we changed trains and headed for the Interlaken district the lakes appeared again...

The view opposite us...we were on the wrong side.

Here comes our next train, make sure we have everything and hurry!

We then changed trains again as we started to pick up a lot of hikers and headed up into the mountains. Changing trains in Switzerland is somewhat nerve wrecking as you have to get off with your luggage, look for the other platform, get on the next train in 5 minutes or you missed it!

This time of the year the mountain areas are filled with hikers but as soon as the snow comes they all turn into skiers.

We made it to Interlaken and now on to Lauterbrunnen on a smaller track train. You can see by the numbers we are going higher.

There was only us and this young couple from China in our car and they were amazed with the sights. I was only hoping they wouldn't stick their heads out too fair!

We got our first glimpse of the snow covered Alps as we climbed.

There were more rivers running as well.

Then we had to take a cable car which was scary because it was bumpy as we went up higher.

Then finally a very small train up to Murren which is a small village that sits at over 5000 feet high in the mountains.

Our Chinese friends went this far as well.

Now we could really see the snow covered peaks because we were right next to them. It was gorgeous!

We were happy to see our home for the next three nights, Chalet Fontana, which is on the Main Street in the town.

We have the loft room, the one with the green shutters.

It looks comfortable and offers a good night's sleep in the fresh air of the Swiss Alps! Gotta love it!!
