Kotor Montenegro

Kotor Montenegro

Arrived early to Kotor which is north of Budva but still on the coast. It is a beautiful little town surrounded by mountains and located at the mouth of a 28km long inlet called the Bay of Kotor. It is a great sheltered harbour which during WWII the Germans used for a submarine base. Now it is a stop for cruise ships going up the coast and there was one in port for the day that had arrived from Dubrovnik

A family at the beach with a cruise ship in the background. The port is so deep that the ships pull right up to the dock.

On the top of the Old Town there is a fortress that has defended the area for centuries, it is almost 1400 steps to the top so we debated the trek but decided to do it anyway. It was very challenging not just because of the steps but also the poor conditions of the trail. However the views along the way and on top were definitely worth it.

A view from halfway up the trail, the bay of Kotor is quite stunning

A view through the Fortress walls

How many more steps?
We made it!!

After we got down we went straight for a comfy chair and a cold beverage and then strolled around the harbour and took in the sights. There are many beautiful buildings most of which are in Venetian style as the Venetians had occupied the town for over 400 years. There are also a lot of new homes and renovations taking place around the harbour which have million dollar views with million dollar price tags. Again as in Budva the Russian millionaires own most of them as holiday homes.

A gyspy family that were begging on the streets. We saw these families all over our trip and were told that this is their lifestyle, the women and children spend their days begging, the children are not in school and they move from place to place.

Our hotel was one of the nicest we have been in and also had good internet so we spent some time catching up online and relaxing as being by the water on a warm sunny day is just the place we like to be. It has been so great to be able to sit out in the day and have supper outside as well.

The view from the place we had lunch

Speaking of supper we went to another great restaurant on the promenade that had white linen service and attentive waiters. Of course the menu was full of fish; you could even choose your own from the fish tank. This time I opted for breaded calamari served with potatoes and a green vegetable called silver beet which is similar to spinach. They were very tender and crispy at the same time. We had the discussion that squid and calamari are not the same though we always thought so, however our dinner companions tell us that calamari is much smaller, though the size didn’t affect the taste.

Looks delicious doesn't it?

Retired early as we, well I can only speak for me was still tired from the hike.
