Dubrovnik Croatia 2

Dubrovnik Croatia

We spent a couple more days in Dubrovnik and moved into our own apartment where we were able to sit on our little terrace and do our laundry. The owners are really friendly as they live in the bottom of the building and have 4 small apartments for rent on the top floor. Very quiet and clean, just the way we like it.

Our little terrace, notice the limes growing on the tree
It seemed everyone was taking advantage of the weather to do the laundry. I don't think there are many dryers over this way.

The weather was really hot so we decided to take the ferry over to the nearest island from Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island. It is a small island that the locals go to escape the crowds in the city. Even though it was October there were many people swimming in the ocean or sea as they call it. The water temperature was 22C so warmer than most of our water at peak season. We forgot our swimsuits so didn’t get a chance to go in the water though it looked quite inviting.

We walked around the island and met the only residents which are peacocks. There is also an old fortress that is being restored and a couple of small cafes. We stopped at one where there was a guy playing classical guitar, a pleasant way to spend a sunny afternoon.

There are many wild peacocks on the island

Going on the ferry also gave us a chance to view Dubrovnik from the ocean as well as being able to see all the different types of boats on the water.

We also decided to take in a War Photos Exhibit that portrayed the collapse of Yugoslavia. This is the permanent collection but there was also a visiting photographer with scenes from the war in Pakistan and Afghanistan. These are war journalists whose photos have won many awards because of their quality. All the photos were moving but we were especially touched with photos from towns and cities we had visited that were devastated by the war, The stories of our guides became more real to us as we saw the faces of the people and the destruction of places such as Vokuvar and Sarajevo.

No place to call home after the bombing of Sarajevo
The devastation of Vukovar
The burning of Dubrovnik

We also decided to take a break from eating out and enjoyed some meals on our terrace. Eating out is great but making our own food was a welcome addition to our diet. Instead of cheese, bread and meat for breakfast we actually had fruit and yogurt. Don says it would have been better if there was salt fish on the table as well. It’s funny but after a while on the road we do miss our own food.

We definitely had a relaxing two days on our own and time to rest up a little before moving on to Split in the morning.

  1. I like totally and agree. And I think that in order to be comfortable with your style is to wear it more often. So wear your style to the lab on days that you don't have to do anything bloody, muddy or otherwise gross!
