Music, music and more music!

This past week has been full of music, parties and much fun...just another week in Progreso!

We have been trying to fit in as much as possible because we feel that our time here is slipping away so quickly and there is so much to see and do.

On Wednesday we went to the weekly jam session at Hotel Yahkunah, a hotel and restaurant just up the road from us. Each Wednesday the locals get together to play for the crowd and pass the afternoon. There is much music, dancing and laughter!

The band warming up...

Hugo and his son Issac, the youngest member of the band.

Here was the youngest dancer!

Then on Friday night we took the combi to Chelem, a little town about 10 km from here and went to a place called Lizard Joes where we met up with a crowd from Costa Brava, again for some great Texas BBQ and music from a young Mexican band who did covers of the Beatles and the Doors. The evening was great fun and who can beat sitting outside on a warm Mexican night.

They really rocked it out and were greatly enjoyed by the band.

Don and I at Lizard Joes.

We also went to Merida to the Symphony, not something we do very often but it was great. They have a full season here from January to June and the best seat in the house is 150 pesos! For the orchestra lovers out there here was the program...

We enjoyed Tchaikovsky the best as his music was quite lively and involved the whole orchestra.

The Sunday crowd going into the theatre which is located in a older building in Centro.

Inside the hall...

Don't we look like symphony going people?

After the symphony we went out to lunch at a German restaurant where we had some great food and a change from the Mexican cuisine...

When Don ordered this off the menu the waiter asked Grande?? Don said Si.

I had schnitzel...

And Bob had beer...

We really enjoyed our day with Bob, Rachel and Pauline.

Another night this week the three of us, Pauline, Rachel and myself went into Merida to a play in support of the Yucatan Educate program.

Carnival has started in Progreso so there will be two weeks of concerts, parades and other special events. On Sunday night we went to the Palacio Municipal with most of the people in Progreso. That night there was a concert featuring groups of dancers...there were young and old, people of all shapes and sizes and a great time was had by all!

There were lots of people there and a large stage set up in front of the City Hall.

The vendors were out...this lady was selling pieces of cake and macaroni salad!

She was selling crocheted hats...

The evening progressed with different groups taking the stage doing their dancing, some were quite good, others NOT but everyone had a great time. It was wonderful to be there with the crowd enjoying the evening.

These two dancers were sitting ahead of us and posed for a picture.

Here were some of the younger dancers.

The costumes were very colourful and this particular lady had the moves!

They did a few numbers from Mary Poppins...

They did a song from CATS...

Also show girls doing Coco cabana.

People stayed late into the night and there were many families....

This little fellow was fast asleep before the show ended.

We also had a couple of fiestas...

Potluck here at Casa Destino, enjoyed by everyone.

And the celebration of the Dia of Candle-aria at Spanish class...

The traditional meal on this day consists of homemade tamales and hot chocolate. These tamales were made by our Mexican friends.

Enjoying the food and the company...

Already into February and trying not to do the countdown to when we leave. We are hoping to get a few trips into Merida to visit some of the sights we didn't see last time as well as get a side trip to Campeche. Then there are a lot of Carnival events to take in here in Progreso. Oh well, can only do what we can!
